The brief
Every year a printed booklet sets out the expected first day of each lunar month, with the crescent’s age, altitude and visibility at sunset. People trust it, but a booklet is hard to carry and harder to search.
The brief was to turn it into something you open every day: the same data, checked against the booklet, plus the parts a book cannot do, such as today’s date, the next prayer, the next occasion, and a reminder set in a tap.
What we did
- Modelled the year as data: twelve months with their crescent observations, occasions and recommended deeds, and the prayer timetable for Najaf.
- Designed a home screen that answers the three daily questions at a glance: what is the date, when is the next prayer, what is coming up.
- Built the crescent view with the booklet’s own figures (age, altitude, lag and illumination) and a plain-language verdict on visibility.
- Added the supplications and ziyārāt of each month from Mafātīḥ al-Jinān, indexed and copyable, and made the whole app work without a connection.
Highlights
Today, at a glance
The Hijri and Gregorian date, the next adhan with a live countdown, and the next occasion with its Gregorian equivalent.
Crescent data for your location
The booklet’s figures for the Najaf horizon, and a visibility estimate for wherever you are.
Twelve months, indexed
Each month opens to its calendar, its occasions, its crescent data and its recommended deeds.
Reminders
A tap on any occasion sets a notification; alerts can be managed in one place.
Offline by design
Everything is on the device, so it works in the mosque, on the road, and without a connection.
Where it stands
The 1448 AH edition is live and installable. Each new year is a data update, not a rebuild, so the calendar can be renewed annually without changing how people use it.
